Routt Powder Riders   --   Steamboat Springs, Colorado

Columbine Access Project

The USFS has proposed changing trails and the Quarry Parking Area in Columbine. The groomed trail would no longer run along FSR 490, but from FSR 410 would connect to FSR 550 via FSR 418A, 413A and 413. The USFS has proposed creating a new parking area where FSR 413 connects with FSR 550. What would happen to the Quarry Parking Lot is not specified in their proposal.

The intent of the proposed changes are to eliminate possible safety concerns along FSR 490 as private land owners are plowing in and using the road for vehicular traffic and to create one large parking area away from privately held property in Columbine which can service both winter and summer uses.

So how can you get involved, learn more and voice your opinion?

    1. Contact Kent Foster with the USFS at (970) 870-2142 or kfoster@fs.fed.us and tell him you would like to be kept informed of the Columbine proposals.
    2. Comment during the scoping period from July 26 to August 26. Tell the Forest Service which plan you prefer and why. Do not sign a petition. Do not send a form letter. Please! Five letters evidencing constructive thought will weigh more heavily than a petition with 500 signatures on it.
    3. Come to the Routt Powder Riders special meeting on July 29th at 6pm in the Yampa Valley Electric Association’s Community Meeting Room at 32 10th Street.
    4. Come to the Trail Walk planned for July 25th. Walk the proposed trails, ask questions and provide constructive suggestions. Meet at the North Routt Fire Protection Station #2 at Steamboat Lake at 9:30am.
    5. Join the Routt Powder Riders.
