Advance, Promote, and Preserve the Sport of Snowmobiling

Dear Snowmobiler,

Currently almost every snowmobile riding area on public land in Colorado is going through Forest Recreation Use Plan and BLM Resource Management Plan revisions that could affect virtually every riding area on public land in Colorado. Motorized recreation, as a whole, has been losing thousands of acres with each and every plan revision.

Specific areas that have been identified as a serious threat to losing land available to snowmobiling, which we are currently addressing:

  • Rabbit Ears Pass and the North Routt Forest
Struggle between snowmobilers and other winter recreation users.

  • White River National Forest
Revised Travel Management Plan could eliminate even more snowmobile areas in this
        National Forest.

  • Norwood/Telluride area
A group of activists are trying to get several hundred thousand acres closed to
snowmobiling; affecting areas that have been used by snowmobilers for over 40 years.

  • Vail Pass Area
We currently sit on a Task Force to protect our interest in this area.

  • Red Mountain Pass between Silverton and Ouray
New struggle between winter recreation users we hope to resolve this winter.

  • San Juan Forest
Draft of the Forest Revision and BLM Resource Management Plan shows losing areas
that have historically been snowmobiling areas. We have been lobbying for this injustice to
be corrected and will continue to have our voice heard in this snowmobile riding area.

  • Pike San Isabel

  • Grand Mesa Uncompahgre Gunnison National Forest

Now we have a new, very serious threat. Groups of anti-motorized activists are attempting to bypass Travel Management Plans by taking their Wilderness Proposal directly to Congress. That means no input from motorized enthusiasts, the general public or even land management agencies. This Proposal - - the Hidden Gems Wilderness of over 600,000 acres covering much of the White River National Forest - - if approved could eliminate trail systems near Rifle, Glenwood Springs, Meeker, Minturn, Vail and Carbondale. Their goal is to bring the wilderness right to I-70. For more information on this new threat go to www.whiteriverwild.org.

The Colorado Snowmobile Association (CSA) is very involved in making sure the voices of snowmobilers are heard. We are committed to making a difference in these proposals, plans and revisions and keeping snowmobiling riding areas open in Colorado.

Although many countless volunteer hours are given in this endeavor . . . we need financial support and backing. We need your help!

A gift of $25, $50, $100 or whatever you can afford will help us continue our endeavor to keep the voice of snowmobilers heard in the state of Colorado.

With your help we can continue to dedicate ourselves to promoting our sport. Some successes we have achieved:

    -   Success, in cooperation with other recreation groups, in forcing the White River National Forest to pull their very damaging Travel Management Plan draft for rewrite to adequately incorporate the Travel Management Rule.

     -   Successful grassroots efforts to save the Craig trail system threatened by the Little Snake Field Office Resource Management Plan.

     -   Created more opportunities for safety and avalanche education all over the state.

     -   Grooming and maintenance on 2600 miles of trails throughout the state.

     -   Updated and revised our website, www.coloradosledcity.com, by improving access and navigation for instant information regarding trails throughout Colorado.

     -   Continue to promote family, fun, trail courtesy, and respect for all users.

We have set out fundraising goal for 2007 of $25,000 by January 1st. A donation of $25 by every snowmobiler in Colorado would far surpass that goal. We need You. We can't continue to be heard if we have no funds. We can't do it without you. All gifts to CSA are tax deductible.

What can you do to help?

  •   Give a tax deductible gift of $25, $50, $100 or whatever amount you can today.
  •   Join CSA or your local club.
As a CSA member you will receive a subscription to the SnowScoop which has a "Right to Ride" article as well as other safety and news articles about snowmobiling in Colorado; receive an Accidental Death and Dismemberment policy as well as several other programs designed just for our members.

The reality is that groups with large memberships behind hem are heard more than the individuals. Don't be content to sit on the fence and watch our snowmobile riding areas continue to disappear.

Take a stand . . . be heard now . . . before your favorite area is just a memory.

Ride safe, ride smart, ride courteous.

              See you on the trails!
